Pinecone

Firestarters

Materials:

Pinecones

Paraffin Wax

Sawdust

Crayons (optional)

Chemical Coloring

Essential Oil (optional)

Chemical Coloring:

Table Salt-  Yellow Flame

Borax Soap(sodium tetraborate)- Green Flame

Salt Substitute(Potassium)- Violet Flame

Epsom Salts- White Flame

Boric Acid- Deep Red Flame

You can make different colored flames by using one of the chemicals listed above.  It is not recommended that you mix the chemicals together.  Mix the chemical (if you use one) with fine sawdust.

Melt Paraffin Wax in a double broiler (one not used for food).  You may add a crayon to this to change the color of the wax.    With a pair of tongs dip the pinecone into the wax.  One or two coats is enough.  Then immediately dip the pinecone into the sawdust mixture.  Set aside to dry for approximately 2 hours.  After the pinecone is completely dry shake out the excess sawdust mixture.

Note:  Use caution, for all items are flammable.  Only put one pinecone in the fire at a time and keep away from children.
