Storing Extra Seed
Most packaged seed can be kept for the next growing season if it is stored correctly. However, there are exceptions. Lettuce, onions, chives and parsnips should be replaced every year.
Stored seed is damaged most by heat and humidity. The best way to store left over seed is to place them in a zip lock freezer bag or a sealed glass jar and place them in your refrigerator. Do not store them in the freezer. If you are unable to use a refrigerator, then store the seed in your coolest room.
Next season, you can test your seed for estimated viability. In a saucer place two wet paper towels, add 10-20 of your seeds, then cover with another saucer to retain moisture. Place the saucer in a warm area. In three days check the seed for germination, then check daily. When you think all the seed has germinated that is able to, then count your seed. If less than half of your seed germinated, you should discard the seed, if more than half germinated your seed should be worth planting.
